BEC Coronavirus Update

Our first virtual Sunday Program was a success! Excited to see you again on April 5th!

Sent to all families March 24th at Noon

Dear Breman Education Center Parents:

Almost two thousand years ago, Rabbi Hillel taught, “Do not separate yourself from the community.” In trying times like these when we are all searching to find a new normal (managing our kids’ new virtual school schedules, keeping them entertained them, living at home 24/7, etc.), it is so easy for us to overlook some of the sources of comfort and healing in our lives. On behalf of The Temple clergy, staff, and the Breman Education Center faculty, we are writing to let you know that we are here for you and your children to strengthen our sacred community and to help create some normalcy in your families’ lives.

After a successful start of our virtual 4th-7th grade Midweek Program this week, we are happy to share with you that our Sunday Program will go virtual beginning this Sunday morning March 29. With so many new stresses and challenges in our lives, these sessions will be meaningful, but shortened (30-45 minutes each week to allow multiple children in each family to have access to limited computers and tablets) and with the central goal of our program in mind, “Sparking Positive Jewish Identities.” Our faculty and staff have worked hard to focus on essential curricular materials for each grade level and to add joy to your children’s lives.

We are happy to announce that this upcoming Sunday, each grade will be spending time with their teachers and welcoming a rabbi or cantor to their first virtual meeting. Tomorrow (Wednesday) you will be receiving a grade-specific email with a web-link for this Sunday’s meetings and basic information about your child’s Sunday schedule for the rest of the year. Additionally, high school teens will be receiving information later this week about Zoom Meeting social hang-outs and events to keep them connected with friends in the evenings.

As the Jewish world is preparing to celebrate “from slavery to freedom” in the weeks leading up to Passover, let us make sure our children are celebrating our peoplehood together each Sunday morning with their teachers and friends.

With all blessing for your family’s health and safety,

Steven

P.S.  Thank you to our faculty for sending out a "hello" video and important links last week to our families. Below are a couple additional helpful resources for you and your family.

Sent to Midweek Hebrew Families on 3/18 at 3:30

Although these unprecedented times are keeping us apart, we are excited to meet virtually to finish out our year for Midweek Hebrew for the next two weeks, March 23rd and 30th.

Online sessions will occur during the regularly scheduled midweek Hebrew times with each grade’s lesson occurring for one half hour period.  Splitting the time this way allows us to accommodate for families with students in multiple grades.  Students have also been broken up into smaller groups for their sessions with a maximum of 8 students present on a call.

The basic schedule is below*:

4th Grade

5th Grade

6th Grade

Monday

4:30pm-5:00pm

5:00pm-5:30pm

5:30pm-6:00pm

Tuesday

5:00pm-5:30pm

5:30pm-6:00pm

6:00pm-6:30pm

Wednesday

4:30pm-5:00pm

5:00pm-5:30pm

5:30pm-6:00pm

These sessions will be occurring using the Zoom platform. We will contact you soon with the name of the teacher leading your child’s class with the link to join and any materials needed. We know that many of your children do not have their Hebrew books at home, so books will not be necessary for a productive session.

Finally, it is not necessary that you create an account to join the online sessions.  Please also keep in mind that the first time you access zoom on your computer you need to download some components of the application to the device you are using. For support on Zoom, click here: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us.  If your children are not already using it, please log in 10 minutes before a session to make sure all will run smoothly.  While Zoom can be used on a smartphone, please have your child use a laptop or desktop with a webcam and mic or an iPad that stands upright.

If you have any questions at all, do not hesitate to ask. We know that these next few weeks will be challenging, but we are here to make this part run smoothly for you.

Dear BEC Families:

As you are all being overburdened with emails from every business, school, and program, we want to share a couple of important details regarding The Temple Breman Education Center as we move forward during The Temple’s suspension of in-house programming and classes.

  • There are no in-house Sunday or midweek programs between March 15-25.  Updates will be provided in the coming days for future sessions.
  • This Sunday’s Sheer Kef Purim performance and carnival are cancelled.  Over the coming weeks, a decision will be made about the possibility of rescheduling the Lion King performance this program year.
  • Faculty Members are meeting this Sunday.  They will be working on how to virtually communicate with students over the coming weeks, and possibly sharing some virtual lessons for home use.
  • Midweek lessons will happen virtually the week of March 23-25 for 30 minutes during regularly scheduled Midweek Program times.  Please be on the lookout next week for information about these meetings and how to log-in.
  • B’nei Mitzvah tutoring will continue virtually for those students who have begun midweek tutoring.  Tutors and/or The Temple staff will start contacting families next week.
  • The Temple is a closed campus for the next two weeks to help our country protect itself.  However, our phone lines (during business hours) and emails are open for your questions and needs. To be clear, we are not closing – our work never stops! Like most of our communal organizations, schools and synagogues, we will just be working differently.
  • Upcoming Programs Cancelled:
    • Mini Shabbat Morning - Saturday, March 14
    • YoFi Shabbat - Friday evening, March 20
    • 1st Grade Family Social – Sunday, March 22
    • 6th Grade Field Trip to Anne Frank Museum – Sunday, March 22
    • 5th and 6th Grade Trips – Friday, March 27 – Saturday, March 28

On behalf of our clergy, staff, and BEC faculty will continue to work to provide as many services as possible over the next few weeks.  On behalf of the Breman Education Center, we wish you and your family much health during this difficult time and much peace this Shabbat.
