Reverse Tashlich - Join our Temple Family Chattahoochee Riverkeeper Cleanup Project Sunday, October 2nd –1:30pm to 4:00pm On Rosh Hashanah, Jews around the world participate in the ancient ritual of Tashlich. We go to a body of water and symbolically cast off the sins of the past year into the water to start the New Year with purity of heart. However, this is not the only time humans cast their “sins” into the sea. Every year approximately six million tons of human-made trash enter the water, posing health and safety hazards to the animals that call the sea their home. Marine debris is a blatant violation of the fundamental Jewish ethical principle Bal Tachchit, the prohibition against destruction of nature. Repair the Sea adds a modern ritual to the Jewish tradition: a local clean up on the Sunday between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, also known as Reverse Tashlich. Where: Inside the Perimeter - Based on rain events, trash is constantly on the move. Therefore, the exact location can’t be determined until one week prior to the event. What to Expect: We will be picking up trash in and around the Chattahoochee river OR a tributary to the river. Trash can consist of plastic bottles, bags, balls (of every type), toys, tires, car parts, building materials, and yes even the kitchen sink. WE WILL BE WADING IN THE WATER and/or walking along the banks. Even a little bit of bush-whacking might be involved. Lifting of wet, trash-laden garbage bags required.
