About Us

The Temple, a Reform Jewish congregation, is located in midtown Atlanta and is one of American Judaism’s most historic religious institutions. Founded in 1867, it is the city’s oldest and most diverse synagogue. In 2009, The Temple was named by Newsweek Magazine as one of the most vibrant and dynamic Jewish congregations in the country.  For over 150 years, we have committed to broadening people’s access to a full Jewish life and have built a tradition of social justice work. 

The Temple now has over 4,000 members, hosts a vibrant education program and one of Atlanta’s most respected early learning centers. We are proud of how each member brings his or her own story to our diverse community—such as those who have a multi-generational history at The Temple and those new to Atlanta or The Temple, those who identify as interfaith families, Jews of Color, LGBTQ+, have physical or learning needs, and those of all ages and backgrounds who are seeking an inclusive and welcoming Jewish community – a place to call home. 

Our educational programs are first-class, with our Weinberg Early Learning Center for infants through pre-K students, our Breman Education Center, a fully inclusive youth education program and the only accredited religious school in Atlanta, and a robust adult education program. Our goal is to provide for a lifetime of Jewish learning and to nurture love and pride in Judaism.  

With six active clergy members we offer a dynamic blend of worship opportunities that span from warm and joyous weekly Shabbat worship with piano and occasionally our house band, to The Well monthly service for young professionals, our Mini Shabbat Mornings for tot families to grand classical services incorporating music from our historic pipe organ. Our main sanctuary, constructed in 1931, is on the National Register of Historic Places and provides a truly awe-inspiring space in which to practice Jewish ritual life, and our Covenant Chapel provides a more intimate space. In addition to worship, our clergy team officiates life cycle events, working with each family to create a meaningful and inclusive experience.  

Social justice remains a central aspect of life at The Temple, as it has been for many decades. The civil rights advocacy of Rabbi Jacob Rothschild (z”l) during the 1950s and 1960s led to the infamous bombing of our building in 1958. Undeterred, we have continued to work towards a more just society. Our Rothschild Social Justice Institute was created in 2017 to further this goal. The Temple addresses issues from Racial Justice, LGBTQIA+ Equality and Inclusivity, Gun Violence Prevention, Muslim-Jewish Relations, Environmental Justice, and more. The Zaban-Paradies Center for Homeless Couples is located on The Temple property, and we also are proud of our numerous partnerships with other faith communities and community organizations.
