Screening a Lynching: Leo Frank Before Parade
Sunday, March 23, 2025 • 23 Adar 5785
3:00 PM - 4:30 PMSchwartz Goldstein CParade, the Broadway musical that opens April 1 at the Fox Theatre, is the story of Leo Frank and his trial for the murder of an Atlanta teen and subsequent lynching that has captivated the American public for over 110 years. Now, just before Parade appears, we’ll examine how four dramatic presentations have told the story on film and television.
Join us as Matthew Bernstein and Bob Bahr guide us through the impact these four productions had on the way the memory of Leo Frank’s ordeal was shaped by media.
We’ll view clips from each of the the four productions as well as other documentary materials, including Bernstein’s pioneering study of the Frank case for the University of Georgia Press. His analysis of two films and two dramatic television programs is a vivid attempt to deal with the difficult and often painful issues that were raised by Frank’s lynching in Marietta in 1915.
Matthew Bernstein is Goodrich C. White Professor of Film and Media at Emory University. Bob Bahr frequently writes about entertainment for the Atlanta Jewish Times. Both Matthew and Bob last appeared at The Temple in January with their “Best Bets” for the AJFF.
This program will provide a background leading into our series of events celebrating Parade and Alfred Uhry. On Sunday, March 30, The Breman is hosting a special dinner at The Temple honoring Alfred Uhry, Atlanta’s only Tony, Academy Award, and Pulitzer Prize winner. This celebration coincides with the highly anticipated return of the musical Parade at The Fox.
The Temple is bringing Alfred Uhry to The Fox for a talkback after the Parade performance on Wednesday, April 2.
